The Problem
We were tracking tens of thousands of dollars in equipment on paper and scattered spreadsheets—a genuine nightmare. Everyone agreed we needed a proper asset management system, but there was no budget for one.
What I Built
With sponsorship from the Director of Operations, I built a Flask-based equipment system with barcode scanning and Snipe-IT integration. Total cost: $9.
It took a cross-departmental effort—setting up the infrastructure, getting buy-in, and making it work for everyone’s workflow. It was genuinely fun to build together.
Why It Worked
The rollout was seamless because I understood the users. They’re my coworkers, and I knew their pain points because I shared them. That’s an underrated advantage: building for a group you belong to means you can’t hide behind assumptions.
The feedback since has been overwhelmingly positive.
